Brandon Hills Model Railway Club

For Kids of All Ages

If you have a young train enthusiast in your family (think Thomas the Tank engine and the like), then you must check out the Brandon Hills Model Railway Club  Open Saturdays from 10:00am to 12:00pm, and virtually free (small donations are welcome to help with building and maintainance of the layouts), it is a great outing for kids of all ages.  The club is located in the Brandon General Museum at 19-9th Street.

Our family was first introduced to this model train club when they were located in the Town Centre.  We spent many Saturdays watching the trains circle through each layout.  With plently of space, the club was able to display a variety of train sizes: N scale, HO scale and even a garden train or G scale.  Coupled with Dr. Hobbs' beautiful painted background art, it was awesome!

The following video provides even more history about the club.

The picture below shows our boys enjoying the garden train.

And, the following video created by Alex Robinson, of Erich Stumme, a member of the club, gives you a great look at the layouts that were housed in the Town Centre.

In the spring of 2012, the club had to find a new location as the Town Centre was readying itself for new tenants.  Thus, began the search for a new home...which they found at the Brandon General Museum.  With significantly less space configured differently, the club members have had to start from scratch creating entirely new layouts.  One of the members has been documenting the building of the new layouts through a series of YouTube videos.  It's very interesting to see the progress that the club members are making on their new layouts.

So if you are looking for a place to visit on Saturday mornings with your kids of any age, check out the Brandon Hills Model Railway Club.

So Your Child is a Model Railway Enthusiast?

If your child's fascination persists and they are interested in joining the club, teenagers can join unaccompanied at approximately age 14 (or earlier if accompanied by an adult).  It costs $35 per year (2013 pricing) for a membership.  This money goes towards supplies for the layouts.  With membership, members help build the layouts and can then run their own trains through the layouts.  Contact the Brandon Hills Model Railway Club for more information on joining the club.  Or better yet, just drop in on a Saturday morning and chat with one of the members.  They will be more than willing to give you any information you may need.

Cool Train Outing

If you are interested in a really cool train experience, you and your family could try out the Prairie Dog Central Railway.  The Prairie Dog travels from Winnipeg to a few stations in rural Manitoba.  You can be an engineer for the day (18 or older), have a party on the train, or participate in the many events that they offer.  Check out the following video to get a better idea of what its all about.

Canadian Pacific Holiday Train

Every year, Canadian Pacific has a holiday train decorated with Christmas lights.  In 2012, the train was on the rails for a three-week journey from Beaconsfield, Quebec, finishing up in Port Moody, BC.  The following video shows the train entering Brandon in 2012.
