If you have a kid who wants to play rugby in Brandon, MB, then you should check out Westman Youth Rugby Association (WYRA).  Not sure what rugby looks like?  Check out this Youtube video as CBC's Rick Mercer trains with Canada's national rugby team: 

 

 

Age

Boys and girls ages 6 to 13 can play football with the WYRA.  The kids are organized into the following four divisions:

  • Fundamentals "Kick off to Rugby" (Non-contact) - 6 and 7 year old boys and girls
  • Fundamentals "Kick off to Rugby" (Non-contact) - 8 and 9 year old boys and girls
  • Learning to Train "Developing the Basics" (Contact) - 10 and 11 year old boys and girls
  • Learning to Train "Developing the Basics" (Contact) - 12 to 13 year old boys and girls

 

Prairie Regional Championships are designed for grade 8, 9, and 10 players to transition from the youth rugby program to the High School Programs.

 

Kids that are ages 15 to graduation age can play high school rugby in the Westman High School Rugby league.  Adults can continue playing rugby with the Brandon Barbarians.

Rugby 4  

Season 

WYRA plays in the fall with practices starting in late August on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-7. They usually have three weeks of practice before the first jamboree.

The season is played in September and October through a series of Jamborees in Brandon, Souris and Minnedosa played on Sundays.  

Prairie Regionals are July 12-14, 2014 with practices Saturday or Sunday 4 weeks prior to the tournament 1-4pm.

WHRA starts in the spring with the Keogh Tournament in April and the season finishes by the end of May.

Barbarians start in May and practices are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-9pm. Their games are Saturday or Sunday and the season ends by Mid October.

  

Cost (2014 prices*)

WYRA Fees are determined by year of birth as follows:

  • Ages 6 to 9 - $60
  • Ages 10 to 13 - $85 

 *  Fees could possible increase if Rugby Canada increases cost of insurance.

Fees cover the following items:

  • Jersey, shorts and socks - Cleats/athletic shoes, mouthguards and water/athletic drinks for breaks are NOT included
  • Fee for service of Refs at Saturday games
  • Rugby Manitoba fees (insurance and registration fees)
  • Team pictures included too!

Prairie Regionals

2013 was the first year having Prairie Regionals with boys and girls under 16 and under 18 teams. They had them in Brandon and the cost was $150 per player. For 2014, it will switch to Regina and the fees will have to be adjusted. The fees quoted will not include meals and hotel because parents will be coming in to watch and they will all be staying at the same hotel.

 

Rugby 3Equipment

Participants wear jersey, shorts, and socks.  Optional equipment includes Compression Under Shorts, Compression Under Shirt, Scrum Cap, Rugby Protective Head Gear, Body Armour Shoulder Pads, and Grip Mitt Gloves

 

Location

Games played in Brandon, MB are played at Canada Games Rugby Park (Jon Rielly Field) located at the end of Hilton Avenue on the south side in Brandon, MB.  Here is a map:
